Whimsical Yorkshire

Yorkshire has long been the source of many amazing works of literature. All Creatures Great and Small, Harry Potter's Diagon Alley, home of the Brontë sisters, inspiration for Dracula, amongst many more. Now it is your turn to write something brilliant in the beautiful landscape our team calls home.

We have come up with a short list of some of our favourite places around Yorkshire. Take your notebook and your favourite pen, take a road trip, and let the words flow!

Brimham Rocks

These rocks are the product of 340 million years of erosion from glaciers, rivers, smaller rocks, and more. Since medieval times, they have been the source of myths and legends regarding their creation, from druids to plate collision. It is also home to three different species of heather on the moorlands, as well as a spectacular view over the Nidderdale Area of Natural Beauty. It costs only a few pounds for parking, and there is a café at the top so you can refuel.

Whitby Bay

As undergraduates, our founder Lily and website and social media specialist Lottie met on a class writing retreat to Whitby. Together, they took in all the sights Whitby had to offer: the 199 steps, Whitby Abbey, Whitby Jet, the coastal knick-knack shops. They recommend eating fish and chips on the pier, having afternoon tea in Sherlock's café, and taking the steps in small sections.

Aysgarth Falls

Part of the River Ure, Asygarth Falls is a series of beautiful waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The lower, middle, and upper falls all have their own charm and allure. You could sit right on the water's edge, bring a picnic, paddle in the water and come up with some beautiful literature here. Or, if you are more of the adventurous type, start at the upper falls and hike your way as far as you can down the river. The visitor's centre has maps which suggest the best routes for walking your way around. Next to the middle falls is also an art shop filled with beautiful art inspired by Yorkshire - another place to find some wonderful inspiration here.

The Forbidden Corner

The Forbidden Corner in Leyburn is our perfect whimsical pick! Set in the grounds of an old stately home, the forest and gardens have been turned into a fairytale-esque adventure, perfect for all ages. Walk through a monster's mouth which grumbles as you pass, try not to get sprayed walking throuh the canyon, and join a group of bears for a game of poker. There is an entrance fee for this one, but it is an amazing day out, well worth every penny regardless of your age.

Malham Cove

Recognise this one? If you're a fan of Harry Potter, you definitely should. This spot was featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and little did we know it was right here in Yorkshire! Just goes to show how picturesque Yorkshire is, to say that we thought this landscape was too outlandish for the likes of it. We would recommend taking a whole day for this one, as the closest parking is in a small village nearby, and nearby is Janet's Foss, another beautiful waterfall.

Ribblehead Viaduct

This beautiful railway is actually on our wish list of places to go. We haven't yet visited, but how can you not be tempted by the beauty of this location? We've done some searches for laybys and viewpoints near by and reckon a drive around of the location would find you some beautiful photography spots perfect for a sunset picnic or an afternoon's writing retreat.
